The Importance of Rock Salt in Ayurveda

For many years before it became popular in modern society, rock salt or Saindhava Namak has been considered the healthiest out of all types of salt in Ayurveda. Of the five varieties of salt (lavana} outlined in Ayurvedic scriptures, it is categorized as the healthiest.

Acharya Charaka described Lavanas in different contexts in various formulations. He especially declared that the Saindhava is the best amongst all Lavanas.

It is often used in Ayurvedic remedies as a digestive and laxative agent, in addition to being a taste enhancer. Rock salt also activates the salivary glands in the mouth and gastric juices in the stomach.

Other benefits include regulation of blood pressure (as opposed to iodized salt, that elevates blood pressure), improved digestion, regulation of iodine to overcome iodine deficiency and more. It helps in exfoliating dead skin cells, cleansing skin pores and protecting the natural skin layer. It also strengthens skin tissue to rejuvenate the skin to make it look younger and firm.

As an antioxidant, Himalayan pink salt helps in getting rid of toxic minerals and refined salt deposits by stimulating blood circulation and trace mineral balance.

Rock salt may be used as an ingredient in ayurvedic medicine to treat many disorders and ailments. It was found to be extremely effective in the treatment of rheumatic pains and herpes.

The common cold, cough, sore throat other nasal and chest ailments can be treated with recipes that involve rock salt as the main ingredient. It is even used to reduce pain, inflammation and irritation from insect bites.
